Happy Holidays: Christmas Tree Safety
The Christmas season is here and it's impossible to miss the chill in the air, the colorful light strung from the porch, and the Christmas tree sparkling from the living room window. For many families, decorating the tree is an important part of the holiday tradition. But without taking the proper steps, that holiday center piece can become a fire hazard. Christmas tree fires are a realistic threat, and according to the U.S. Fire Administration, cause over $16.7 million in property damage each year. It's important to keep in mind some routine safety tips to help keep the holidays at home a little safer:
When you are picked out a tree, be sure to select a fresh, healthy specimen. Does the tree lose needles when you touch it? Do the needles appear dry and discolored? These are signs that the tree might be old and brittle. Also be sure to give the tree plenty of water once you get it home. Dry Christmas trees make for perfect fodder for an electrical spark. Take a look at just how quickly a tree can burn when exposed to flame:
Place the tree at least three feet away from heat sources. This includes fire places, heat vents, lights, space heaters and candles. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), a heat source too close to the tree causes 1 in every 5 fires that occur during the holiday season. Also be sure that the tree isn't blocking any exits in case there is an emergency.
Check your strings of lights broken or worn cords and loose bulbs. NFPA also reported that 1 in every 3 tree fires is caused by electrical problems, which is why it is important to make sure lights are safe before they are strung up as decor. Read the manufacturer's instructions before using the lights and read the packaging carefully to ensure the lights have been safety tested. Be sure to unplug indoor and outdoor Christmas lights before going to bed or leaving the house.
Take the time to double check smoke detectors. If checking your home's smoke detectors isn't already a part of your routine, now is a great time to start! Ensure that batteries are fresh and that the detectors are free of dust and cobwebs.
These small tips are an important step towards a bright and happy holiday season at home. Ensure that your Christmas tree is well watered, away from heat sources, and that all decorations are safe for use. The Inspections Unlimited team wishes you and your family a happy and safe holiday season!
