Fall & Winter Preparation
Unfortunately summer is coming to an end and it’s that time to prepare your home for fall and winter. Preparing a home for fall and winter is as important as pulling your coat out of the closet when cold weather comes. Here are a few items to inspect and prepare for fall:Roofing material - check for general wear, broken, loose, or missing shingles, raised nails or staples, evaluate flashing condition.
Chimney - Clean the chimney, secure chimney cap, check flashing and caulking, evaluate dampers, stove pipes and appliance connections.
Gutters - Clean and seal gutters, secure down spouts and adjust into the drain system or on splash blocks, evaluate drains to assure they function properly.
Siding - Check the condition of caulking and paint, trim vegetation away 12” from the structure, provide at least 6” of clearance from the siding to the soil.
Windows - Check weatherstripping, window glazing and caulking around windows, install storm windows as needed.
Doors - Repair damaged weatherstripping, install storm doors, repair damaged thresholds
Foundation - Check vent screens, assure water will drain away from the foundation.
Plumbing - Drain sprinkler systems, shut-off or protect exterior faucets, add insulation to exposed plumbing.
Heating - Service heaters, clean or change filters, clean fans and vents, consider cleaning ducting.
Electrical - Make sure all exterior outlets have appropriate weather protective covers, repair any damaged or exposed wiring, remove extension cords and summer lighting.
